“Clean Eating” is the word we hear more often now than ever! Clean eating comes from the belief that eliminating or reducing all chemicals from our diet such as processed/packaged foods but rather a natural approach to the basic of eating. Giving our body what it needs to function at its highest potential by fueling it with nutritious, whole foods.

EAT FOOD FOR FUEL

FRUIT & VEGETABLES: The idea of clean eating is the eat foods that are most natural to nature, meaning foods that have not been altered by man in any way. Buying foods from your local farmers market is a great way to guarantee quality produce.


LEAN MEATS: Lean meats are an excellent source of complete protein, that creates lean muscle. When buying meat, try to stick to lean, quality meats that do not contain added hormones and fillers. A good way to prevent purchasing meat with these ingredients is to get your meat from a local butcher or choose the organic option in the supermarket.


GRAINS: Think ‘whole’ grains. Things like brown rice, quinoa, rye bread, oats, couscous, and barley are all good options. Avoid eating ‘white’ bread, pasta and rice – these have all been "processed" meaning most of the nutrition has been removed and often contain additives, artificial flavorings, and other chemical ingredients.


FEWER PACKAGED FOODS: Just because the box says "gluten-free" or "organic," doesn’t mean it’s a good choice. Many food companies have come up with clever marketing tactics, attempting to trick shoppers into buying their products.


H20 IS THE WAY TO GO: Hydrating your body with good ole' fashion water is the best drink for your body. Avoid waters that contain flavor but say "zero calories." Most of the time, these drinks have been filled with artificial flavors and sweeteners that your body doesn't know how to process. Your body will treat these ingredients like a chemical which lowers your immune system and makes your body function at a lower level. Avoid drinking juices as most are full of added sugar if you do drink juices make sure to stick with the least processed versions and ones that say "no added sugars" and avoid high-fructose corn syrup.

CLEAR THE KITCHEN: Removing bad stuff in your fridge and pantry will make your journey to healthier eating a lot easier. No one likes to waste food, so create a pile to donate to your local food bank and another pile to simply get rid of. A simple way to decide if you should keep a package is to read the ingredients. If you can't pronounce any of the ingredients, toss it!


STOCK UP ON PRODUCE: Stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains and lean meats will prepare you for clean eating. Planning ahead by making healthy snacks to munch on throughout the day will help you avoid making poor choices. Here are a few healthy snack ideas:

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN: You may be surprised, but clean eating is much easier than you think when you have planned ahead. Try laying out your meals for the next week; most people like to use Sunday as their pre-plan day.


MAKE A LIST: Be prepare and write out your shopping list to avoid purchasing unnecessary items or possibly forgetting some key ingredients. By sticking to your list, it can help you avoid grabbing up those chips or cookies.
BABY STEPS: Changing your eating habits can be quite difficult, but just remember Rome wasn't built in a day, Make subtle tweaks to your meal planning and eventually you will see how much better you feel when you plan ahead and eat healthier.
